BRILLIAN project launch: A Circular Future for Rural Areas in the EU – June 2023

The launch for the Brillian Project took place in Zaragoza on 13 June 2023.

The rural regions cover 80% of the European Union’s territory and house 30% of its population. To address the unique opportunities and challenges they present, we’ve initiated the BRILLIAN project. This project aims to facilitate a transition to bio-based economies in these areas by integrating primary producers into the supply chain, aligning with the Common Agricultural Policy, the Green Deal, and the European Bioeconomy Strategy. Our plan is to validate ten bio-based value chains using diverse raw materials to produce a range of bio-products.

The project is funded by the Circular Bio-Based Europe initiative under ‘Horizon Europe 2021-2027’, with €6M funding the project spans 13 entities from six countries.

Project visit to Brillian partner Paturpat

David Newman visits Brillian partner Paturpat on August 7 2023, accompanied by their director Koldo Lope de Robles.

Paturpat have the task of extracting starches from their potato processing plant wastes and then producing a starch which could have several industrial uses, for example for making bioplastics or in paper manufacturing. Paturpat produces around 6000 tons of waste from potato processing from which starches can be extracted.  The pilot plant installation begins in September.
